这句话算是固定的用法. Soul 在这里就是指人而言. 记得有一次跟老美出去爬山 , 只见一望无际的森林, 适逄当时有一部很红的电影 Blair Witch Project 讲得也是三个大学生在森林里面迷路的故事, 大家走到后来心里都毛毛的, 因为半个人影也没有, 有一个老美就说了这一句, “Not a soul in sight.”
如果讲的不是人而是其它的东西的话, 则用 “Not a thing”。 例如别人问你, “Did you see anything in the bush?” 要是你什么也没看到, 你就可以回答, “Not a thing”。
