Once I’ve finished editing the interview and posted it to our podcast, I send it to CastingWords to be transcribed. They just changed their pricing structure. They charge .75 per each minute of your recording, and you can send them the RSS feed or upload an MP3 or WAV file. They charge .45 per minute if you set up a subscription so that each time you publish a new podcast to your RSS feed, they transcribe it. It takes them 2-5 days to get the transcript back to me. Before posting, I read through the transcript while listening to the recording and check for

对中国白领的一个很不错的描述!

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Somewhere in the middle of this spectrum are the individuals that I conduct day-to-day communication with, usually consisting of white collar Chinese employees in large multinational companies who have graduated from some of the top universities in China and speak a smattering of English and who, as a result, hold the mistaken belief that they are a superior class far above other Chinese. These are some of the most arrogant, self-important yet ironicallly ignorant and unprofessional individuals that I’ve ever had the misfortune to deal with.

多好的文字啊。:) 怎么这段当时也忘了留存原文url了。这几篇都是前一段时间,可能很早收集的。谁知道原文url请告诉我我加上。

willy-nilly

Me: We don’t have a contract with the hotel, we can’t just write them cheques willy-nilly! And we most certainly cannot act as a guarantee for all our clients.

Harpy: They won’t bank it in, they just want a guarantee. It doesn’t need to say anything, you can just (I swear to God this is exactly what she said) write a blank cheque.

Me: sputtering I… WHAT?

Harpy: That’s right, you heard me.

Me: Look Miss Harpy, I don’t think you understand the definition of a guarantor. In fact, there is no agreement, written or otherwise, that names our company asParty A’s guarantor.

Harpy: spitting fire I don’t see what the big deal is.

use of the same consonant at the beginning of each stressed syllable in a line of verse; “around the rock the ragged rascal ran” wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Alliteration is a stylistic device, or literary technique, in which successive words (more strictly, stressed syllables) begin with the same consonant sound or letter. Alliteration is a frequent tool in poetry but it is also common in prose, particularly to highlight short phrases. Especially in poetry, it contributes to euphony of the passage, lending it a musical air. It may act to humorous effect. … en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliteration

Thousands of gorillas with communicative and emotional capacities similar to Koko, Michael and Ndume are being killed in their African forest homes each year by commercial poachers in the illegal “bushmeat” trade.

http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Abushmea...

  • wild animals killed for food. In 1998, 3,000 gorillas and 4,000 chimpanzees were illegally killed in the commercial bushmeat trade. sciencenorth.ca/chimp/glossary.htm

  • Bushmeat (from the French “viande de brousse”) hunting is common in sub-Saharan Africa’s dense forests. It refers to the hunting of any animal which is not traditionally regarded to be a game animal, but is nonetheless edible. The meat may appeal to poor city dwellers with few choices, for example. Bushmeat animals include rats, antelopes, and forest elephants, among others. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushmeat

At this rate, gorillas and other great apes (except humans) could be completely wiped out in their wild habitats in less than a decade or two — decimated even before the timber industry finishes cutting down the forests.

  • kill one in every ten, as of mutineers in Roman armies
  • eliminate: kill in large numbers; “the plague wiped out an entire population” wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

  • Decimation was a form of extreme military discipline imposed by officers in the Roman Army. Literally meaning “removal of a tenth,” this punishment was assigned to mutinous or cowardly soldiers. Those selected for punishment were divided into groups of ten; each group cast lots, and the soldier on whom the lot fell was executed by his nine comrades, often by stoning or clubbing. … en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimate
